UNknown Worlds & Cards

the planeless masses

Many cards are designed with specific planes in mind, but many are not. Of those that aren’t from any one plane, some are fully generic and could exist anywhere, but others have a decisive, iconic visual design. Many of these cards are from expansions like Commander, and are just as likely to be one-off fun artistic explorations as they are creative seeds for new worlds. This is the collection of cards that don’t belong to any known plane yet, but have a very good chance of being visited one day in a future expansion. When that happens, they’ll be the first to move over to the new plane entry. Many of these hint at very cool worlds, such as ones with cyberpunk drones or worlds with starlight-powered reindeer that ride the Aurora Borealis.

The current list of worlds being considered as sites for future planes is as follows:

celtic battle world (with Roman Vampires)

Think Braveheart, but with more realistic accents and gladiatorial bloodsuckers. With Licia and Saskia stated to be on the same plane during the initial Commander previews, we don’t know much more about these two legends or where they come from. In Commander Legends, we were given a new hint in the form of the leonin Prava. Top

Commander World

Wherever commander takes place, the commander-unique cards could be perceived to co-exist. Top

cyberpunk world

A world more technically advanced than any that’s been seen in magic thusfar. Top

Dusknel

A trio of mono-black elves from Commander Legends that did not hail from Lorwyn. Some plane contains a place where wood elves, dark elves, and humans live in the same place, and the nocturnal elves harvest nightshade. Top

Land of the GravewokeN

Home to the powerful necromancer Isareth and her undead friends. Isareth was a mighty queen and high priest until she was driven into the catacombs under her temple by a rebellion. Top

Land of Night and Dawn

Home to two warring forces: Krond and Vela. Top

Plane of Ota & Sun

Only a possibility from a single Future Sight card, the concept of a world with morph enchantments is certainly exciting. Top

Plane of Reindeer & Starlight

A world that may just be a literal Christmas special, with lots of snow and imagery relating to the stars. Commander Legends gave us another glimpse with the Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights effect, but still leaves it open. Top

Realm of the Sovereign

Probably just a fun little plane-less story from M19, but these cards hint at a vampire-ruled Eastern-European world. This is possibly part of the unseen continent of Ixalan, and is something we’re keeping an eye out for in the future. Top

Runic Mage World

Magical glowing runes are a common motif, but we’ve yet to see them tied to any individual world in a meaningful way and they often find their way into Core Set artwork. Top

Steampunk Plane

Less aether than Kaladesh, more junkyard than Fiora, this plane is defined by leather, goggles, rivets, and lots of gears. Top

Techno-Lich World

HR Geiger can inspire more than just Phyrexia. This is a dark world that deals in a similar visual design but with liches, zombies, and other forms of non-cyborg undead. Top

victorian-Inspired Plane

All we know is that it’s full of tawdy kitch. Top

Sephara’s Realm

After finding a reference to Sephara in Modern Horizons 2, Sephara and her boon established a new world: one where the archangel flies high above the clouds to dispense justice alongside her faithful followers. Top

Land of the Bone Spire

From M20, the Bone Spire Siege is an event mentioned a few times; likely in an upcoming set, but it could also just be there to build some flavour. Top

Homeland of Sargis Haz

We don’t know where they are or what they’re up to, but we do know they love artifacts and widdle bunnies. Top

Realm of the Orc Horde

Hinted at in M20, this world has a unique look to its orcs with orange-tinted skin and adornments of bones and chainmaille. With the subtle artistic link between Vengeful Warchief and Audacious Thief doubled up with the nod of flavour text and mechanical synergy, we also know this world has humans, elves, and dwarves. Top

Land of the Elemental-Kin

Core Set M20 had an elemental theme, and to flesh it out it contained a lot of unique humanoid elementals. These elemental kin were named similarly and visually close to the Flamekin from Lorwyn, but were distinct in a number of ways. Where they’re actually from remains to be seen. Commander Legends tells us that Arvena is one-of-a-kind, and that elemental kin don’t otherwise mix elements. Top

KINETIC MAGIC WORLD

This promo for Snapcaster Mage showcases such a unique take on Magic that it suggests a world all its own. Very modern costume elements with bold colors, he almost looks as much like a sports player as a mage. Top

World of Scripted Rites

Although they don’t have flavour text, Alharu from Commander Legends shows a very unique character with tribal tattooing and a wand of light that seems to be interacting with bubbling water to summon small souls of the dead. It’s a powerful and interesting piece of art, and one that so far seems unique in the multiverse. Top

Home of Wyleth & Sunsteel

From Commander 2020, and part of Commander Legends, the character Wyleth was introduced. He has a very unique weapon in Blazing Sunsteel, and the magical brand he bears from it is unseen elsewhere, but other than that it’s hard to pinpoint where these are from. If you know of a plane where the sun sends meteors that become magical swords, let us know! Top

Plane of the Umbra Forest

Inspired by the legend Chatterfang from Modern Horizons 2, the plane that contains the Umbra Forest is home to some kind of all-out squirrel war, and one that includes orcs as well. Taken from his bio: “The squirrels of the Umbra Forest had always enjoyed a long, peaceful existence, until drakes from the neighboring Ridgeback Mountains invaded in search of food and threatened to devour them all. Chatterfang, already a veteran of the famous Orcfire Campaign two summers before, rallied an army of fighting squirrels to drive the drakes back and teach them a lesson they'd never forget. He personally took down over a dozen drakes on his own and now wears their fangs as trophies—and as a warning to all other would-be intruders.” Top

Land of Eternal Lightning

Inspired by the legend Thrasta from Modern Horizons 2, this plane is one with gigantic dinosaurs and an ever-storm that unendingly barrages the surface of the world with lightning. Taken from the bio: “Thrasta dwells on a plane beset by never-ending storms. On nights when the storms are at their fiercest, it will find the nearest location of high elevation it can so it can be struck by lightning. The lightning doesn't dissipate—instead, it crackles over Thrasta's hide and charges up the big dinosaur. Only once Thrasta is full to bursting with the storm's power does it go off in search of its siblings, to challenge them in battles that wreck the forest and shake the foundations of the earth itself. Its ambition is to one day drive out all its siblings and be the apex predator of the entire forest.” Top

Plane of the mirrored sky

A card from Commander 2019, Pramikon was an inspired design that takes place on a world where this psychedelic, ever-shimmering wall in the sky directs warfare and peace. Top

Plane of Boundless Forms

The ‘changeling’ creatures of Modern Horizons are unique in their physiology. Made in part of liquid purple ‘goo’, they have mutable shapes that allow them to shift and take any form. The great antlered Morphon, the Boundless, acts as a beacon for all races and species. Top

Plane of Time Travel

Not sure if this is really the motif of the plane, but there are two very obvious time-related cards with flavour attributed to Edorin, the Timesmith, so wherever he’s from, these cards will follow! Top

Plane of The Sliver Gravemother

Introduced in Commander 2023, the Sliver Gravemother was announced to not be from any known plane; so where is she from? Somewhere that’s having a bad time, I imagine, if dead slivers come back to life en masse. Top

Land of the Steelshaper’s Helm

This may just be an easter egg, but what else is this page for if not thin hopes and tangental conjecture? In Commander 2023, artist Paolo Parente illustrated both full-art Champion’s Helm and Steelshaper’s Gift, and both have the same face-in-a-circle iconography. It may just be a nod to how many times Steelshaper’s Gift has been used to fetch Champion’s helm, but I hold out hope; the world looks very cool and unique from these cards if nothing else. Top
