Thunder Junction

The Wild, Wild Waypoint

After the events of March of the Machine, and after New Phyrexia’s Realmbreaker struck holes in the fabric of the multiverse, reality shifted and the phenomena known as “Omenpaths” began to emerge. Found seemingly at random on planes, and fairly rarely, these localized wormholes connect planes together, allowing for unpredictable but survivable interplanar travel. The desolate plane now known as Thunder Junction is a nexus of these omenpaths, and omenpaths from many, many planes connect to it. Whatever quirk of the plane’s design causes this is unknown, but it seems to have made Thunder Junction a hotbed of activity in the months since its rediscovery.

On its own, Thunder Junction is a mostly desert plane with no native fauna and minimal flora beyond cacti and tumbleweeds. It is this backwater and unremarkable nature that made the plane the perfect hiding spot for a massive vault known as 'Maag Taranau”, hidden away by an advanced but now lost race known as the Fomori. The Fomori were known to have colonized part of Ixalan before being driven off, and are possibly related to those found on Ir, though they remain steeped in mystery.

After the advent of the Omenpaths, the roiling energy from its multiplanar connections saturated the plane with mana in the form of a unique magic known as “Thunder”.  Thunder granted sapience and sentience to some of the flora of the plane, resulting in the cactusfolk and other cactus creatures, and is the basis for unique technology when harnessed by mages, such as the iconic ‘thunder blasters.’

Inspired by the genre trappings of the American “Wild West”, Thunder Junction can be most closely related to American western expansion and the California gold rush, with access to planes and the treasures within the Fomori vault as the “gold” in that metaphor. Unlike with American colonial expansion in the real world, however, Thunder Junction is not a plane rich in many natural resources, and is essentially a “stop-off” point or a crossroads between worlds rather than one that exists on with its own identity, leaning further into the pop-culture concept of many cowboy movies from the mid 20th century
