MIRRODIN

argentum & the five suns

Before the Mending, planeswalkers had the ability to create artificial planes, made in their own image. The golem planeswalker, Karn, sought out to create a silver world of mathematical perfection, devoid of any colored mana, and named it Argentum. He seeded it with a race of golems, and left the golem Memnarch in charge as its steward in his absence. Driven mad by residual Phyrexian oil, Memnarch sought to become a planeswalker like Karn, and began to transform Argentum into a world that could support life so that he might find a spark to harvest. By his hand, Argentum became Mirrodin, slowly populated by abducted races of elves, leonin, humans, vedalken, and goblins. The subtle corruption of the Phyrexian oil created a fungus-like structure known as mycosynth which facilitated the mutation of these inhabitants, leading to the natural integration of metal into all of the plane’s life. Mirrodin eventually (as all artificial planes do when left alone) balanced its own mana, creating five massive burning sphered of mana known as the ‘Suns’ that circle the plane. As the fifth sun took its place in the sky, events unfolded that led to the death of Memnarch and Karn’s return, and the initiation of the invasion that would transform Mirrodin into New Phyrexia. Prior to its completion, Mirrodin was unique in the multiverse for its metallic-organic life and habitats of razorgrass fields, copper forests, and quicksilver seas.
