KALDHEIM
Realms of the World Tree
Unlike most planes, Kaldheim is not just one place. Instead, it is a miniature multiverse, containing ten distinct realms that move around and collide in space while connected to a magical phenomena known as The World Tree. These realms are:
Istfell - A mist-covered realm at the very base of the World Tree, it is called home by spirits who died outside of combat.
Karfell - The land of the walking dead known as draugr.
Immersturm - Once thought to be its own plane when previewed in Planechase as Valla, this is a realm with a titanic, never-ending magical storm that spurs the residents into a never-ending state of war.
Gnottvold - Home to trolls and rolling forests littered with old stones.
Bretagard - The ‘primary’ plane for the set of Kaldheim, this is the realm home to humanity, and is often visited by the Gods.
Starnheim - A realm of black and white magic, home to the honored dead and fleets of valkyries.
Surtland - A snow-covered realm built upon ever-shifting tectonic upheaval. Home to massive fire and frost giants who battle one another endlessly.
Skemfar - Shadowed forests cover this realm end-to-end, and is primarily called home by shadow and wood elves.
Axgard - Rough mountains dot the realm’s surface, and red and white mana flow to give power to dwarves: the greatest artificers in all the realms.
Littjara - Little is known of this realm, beyond the masked shapeshifters that call it home.
Inspired by Norse Mythology, Kaldheim has a pantheon of semi-immortal gods who wield great power but are also capable of being slain in combat. In addition, the space between the realms is home to vast Cosmos Beasts, such as the squirrel Toski, the great wolf Sarulf, and the endless serpent Koma. Kaldheim is home to the planeswalker Ramaz, featured in the game ‘Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014’, and the elven planeswalker Tyvar Kell.
