IXALAN
Dinosaurs, Pirates, and a City of Gold
A vast plane covered in uncharted jungles and fantastic ruins, Ixalan is a land that breeds conquest and adventure. Long ago, as part of a plan to trap the planeswalker Nicol Bolas, a sphinx by the name of Azor sacrificed his spark to create an artifact known as the Immortal Sun. The artifact gave off a powerful pull that prevented any who planeswalked to Ixalan from ever leaving, and hid it from the eyes of other prying planeswalkers. Azor entrusted this artifact to the natives of Ixalan, inadvertently causing numerous religions and wars to spout up by those wishing to posses it. The vampires of Torrezon came from the saint Elenda, who took on the curse in order to live long enough to find the Immortal Sun after Azor took it back to the golden city of Orazca. Elenda’s quest eventually spawned the Legion of Dusk, who would take over all of Torrezon and cause the formation of the Brazen Coalition, a collection of refugees who became seafaring pirates with the loss of their homelands.
On the continent of Ixalan, there are two main surface empires: the human Sun Empire who tame dinosaurs, and the aquatic River Heralds who live in the jungles and streams and protect Orazca from outsiders. Recently, the Sun Empire, Brazen Coalition, and Legion of Dusk all sought out Orazca and the Immortal Sun, and an all-out war for control of the city occurred. In the mayhem, Nicol Bolas used the planeswalkers Tezzeret and Vraska to take the Immortal Sun to the plane of Ravnica.
Deep underground, a third great empire lives alongside the gods of Ixalan themselves: the Oltec. The core of the plane is an inverted sphere known as the Core of Paradise, and at its center sits an elemental sun, Chimil, which the Oltec have built their ancient city around. In addition, remnants of a now-vanished but highly advanced multi-plane-spanning culture named “the Coin Empire” can be found here. Entrances between the underground world and the surface world re-opened in the aftermath of the Phyrexian invasion, leading to connections between the two worlds of Ixalan re-forming as they discovered one another. Also within the core of Ixalan are a fungus species derived from the elder fungus the Mycotyrant, a hive-mind of reanimating creatures that feed on the dead.
