INNISTRAD
Unending Horrors
If there was a single plane that it was recommended a planeswalker avoid, many would name Innistrad. A world inspired by gothic horror and in the trappings of 18th and 19th century Europe, Innistrad is every classic horror trope rolled into one. The plane is home to vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts and malevolent spirits, immortal demons, and now eldritch Eldrazi monsters after the events of Eldritch Moon. The home plane of planeswalker Sorin Markov, Innistrad was once kept in a delicate balance between humanity and the horrors at its door by the archangel Avacyn. Sorin created Avacyn before the great mending, using a portion of his soul to do so, and entrusted her with the power to keep humanity alive in the face of his vampiric brethren. A church rose up around her, and ranks of priests and cathars allowed humanity to flourish, but never too much. A balance was always maintained: Avacyn’s power was directly linked to how dire the circumstances were surrounding those she was sworn to protect.
Innistrad’s moon has a unique feature in that it is made entirely of silver. The cause of both the werewolf curse on the plane, it is also capable of trapping even the most powerful beings within it. A shard of the moon, known as the Helvault, was once used to house demons trapped by Avacyn, and the moon now holds the Eldrazi titan Emrakul after her exile by the planeswalker Tamiyo of Kamigawa. Innistrad is also the birthplace of the planeswalkers Tibalt, Vronos, and Arlinn Kord.
