Gastal

Gas-Powered Mayhem

Gastal is a desert wasteland, a self-described “dead world” when compared to even a desert world of zombies like Amonkhet. Although we haven’t been there directly in a main set, the 2024 set Outlaws of Thunder Junction and the 2025 set Aetherdrift gave us the first two looks at Gastal. The racing team from Gastal is called ‘The Endriders’ and is led by their boss ‘Far Fortune’.

There is nothing left in Gastal, at least not from what we’ve seen. It’s a dead plane dotted with scavangers riding in cobbled-together war-rigs across a hot desert, with water and food being the only thing of value beyond gas (oil, petrol) that can fuel war-rigs. When, after the events of the Phyrexian invasion, Omenpaths opened on Gastal, the population began to depart for other worlds; seeing anything as preferable to their current one.

Iconic & Unique Planar Elements

This section is designed to help identify other planar cards in the future, and to help showcase the unique visual and stylistic identiy of the plane.

  • “Mad Max Aesthetic” - Gastal is visually and thematically inspired by the film franchise “Mad Max”, which features a desert world in a pose-apocalypose, where ‘Road Warriors’ ride massive ‘rigs’ and custom cars across expanses of desert.

  • Apocalypse Cars - Unlike Kaladesh, which has filigree flying vehicles, or New Capenna, which has insectoid vehicles, Gastal has very contemporary-looking vehicles like trucks and big-rigs, except with added plates & spikes for additional lethality.

  • Scorpion Dragons - Gastal has a unique species of insectoid dragon known as “Scorpion Dragons”, including the legendary Akul, who went through planar portals to Thunder Junction.

  • Gas-Drinking Vampires - Featured heavily in Aetherdrift, Gastal has a unique species of Vampire that drink oil (instead of blood) for nourishment. Gross.

  • Mutants- Asides from Mirari-era Dominaria and Ravnica’s Simic, Magic has very few ‘mutants’ outside of Universes Beyond products. Due to the apocalyptic nature of the plane, Gastal has numerous mutants. These are more ‘irradiated’ mutants, similar to Fallout, and not gene-spliced mutants.
