BLOOMBURROW
Tiny Tails, Big Adventures!
The only known all-animal plane (so far), Bloomburrow is a beautiful and serene world resembling a North American or European woodland inhabited by anthropomorphic animals and mighty elemental creatures known as “Calamity Beasts.”
One of the most unique things about Bloomburrow is the “animalification” of visitors. As an effect of the plane itself, or by some great magical enchantment placed upon it, any extraplanar visitors to Bloomburrow find themselves transformed to match the plane’s inhabitants, such as the human planeswalker Ral Zarek becoming an Otter when he arrived on Bloomburrow. There are a number of “what-if” cards printed in Bloomburrow’s first set, primarily featuring planeswalkers like Nissa as animal versions of themselves. This is similar to the shrinking effect that the plane of Segovia has on visitors.
The first visit to Bloomburrow primarily focused on the area known as “The Valley”, and is only a small portion of the much larger plane. The animal folk of the Valley are a well-established and complex culture that rivals any humanoid culture from other planes. The animalfolk living in the Valley include, but is are not limited to, Badgerfolk, Batfolk, Beaverfolk, Birdfolk, Foxfolk, Frogfolk, Gerbils, Hedgehogs, Lizardfolk, Minkfolk, Mousefolk, Otterfolk, Possumfolk, Ratfolk, Rabbitfolk, Skunkfolk, Turtlefolk, Voles, and Weaselfolk. There are also non-sapient animals in large number, such as bears, cats, fish, snakes, and many other creatures.
Those in the Valley have access to primarily wooden tools and naturally-grown implements, but also have access to metal due to a unique forest on the plane that grows ironroot trees. These trees have metallic sap with a low smelting point, and is used to craft the weapons and armor of the animalfolk of Bloomburrow.
Bloomburrow does not have traditional seasons, instead always persisting in a hybrid autumnal-springtime similar to Lorwyn. However, it does experience weather shifts and changes due to the effect of Calamity Beasts: massive, non-sapient creatures empowered with great elemental magic. In comparison to the sapient mice, squirrels, and other denizens of the Valley, calamity beasts are absolutely enormous.
